Suffering, on one level or another, is inherent in everyone’s life, and for some that means finding refuge in a restart. Such was the case for songwriter William Russell Wallace who is gearing up to release a new LP, Dirty Soul. Impose Magazine is happy to host the exclusive premiere of its latest single, “Understanding,” today.

Although Wallace has plenty of history as a musician, Dirty Soul marks his official debut coming after turbulent times and rebirth in sobriety. “Understanding” is the golden-hued light pouring in through slatted blinds as Wallace implements a sparse acoustic guitar and his world-weary voice to provide a heart-rending portrait of the beauty of a new beginning informed by deep pain.

Wallace details; “‘Understanding’ was tracked in my room in rehab on my phone the day I wrote it. I think it’s the signature song of the ‘recovery’ tunes I wrote. All the rooms at the treatment center were named for different ideas of recovery – Hope House, Redemption House, things like that. I was in House of Light. That gave me the idea for the lyric in the first verse and it all spilled out from there.”
