In the latest major media event to fall victim to coronavirus concerns, organisers confirmed on Friday (6) that SXSW has been cancelled.

The news comes after a gradual landslide of withdrawals by corporate participants over the past week that included Netflix, Amazon Studios, Warner Media, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.

The City of Austin took the decision to cancel the event, which was due to kick off next week on March 13 and will have huge implications for the Texan locale’s economic forecast.

SXSW confirmed the news on its website and said it was “devastated” to share the news and had to follow directions from the local authority.

Festival brass said they were exploring options to reschedule the event and were working to establish a virtual SXSW as soon as possible for 2020 participants. The event had been set to run from March 13-22.
