One would hope that an ideal relationship has a power balance that works for both parties. To my mind, only a 50/50 relationship is a workable power balance, but I realize that’s not true for everyone. That’s why this “a relationship should be 50/50” meme is hitting harder than it should. The tweets about what splits a relationship up fairly are jokes…yet some of these jokes are too real.

The format seems to have been created by Twitter user @yam_url, who tweeted, “A relationship should be 50/50. She’s buying me the PS5 and I’m buying her one Iced Coffee.”

There are a couple of jokes here: one is that men often joke about getting a woman to buy them a PS5 online for reasons I don’t entirely understand. It seems like a twist on the gold digger trope, but for dudes. The other joke is the idea of buying her a single iced coffee and that being a fair trade. Is the joke that iced coffee super expensive? Or that minimal effort on a man’s part…
